Bell Shakespeare: Modern Spin on a classic

Shakespeare’s timeless classic, The Merchant of Venice is coming to BREC on Saturday 5th of August.

Dark and humorous, Shakespeare’s timeless classic is a story of love, mercy and justice presented by the Sydney based Bell Shakespeare, BREC and Scope Business Imaging.

Anne-Louise Sarks, Director of The Merchant of Venice is excited to bring a production that tackles themes that speak to our current society.

“I adore the complexity that is alive in The Merchant of Venice. Characters are not good or evil but regular people who have some terrible ideas and do awful things. We can relate to them. Setting our production in a paired back contemporary style will allow those questions and ideas to resonate in an Australian contemporary context. No one wins. It is uncomfortable. It is a complexity that we are often denied in our narratives”

Bell Shakespeare have a reputation for bringing Shakespeare’s works to life with a modern edge and never straying from the original messages and context, using Shakespeare’s universal insights to bring inspiration and truth to minds living in an uncertain world.

In addition to creating provocative works, Bell Shakespeare offer workshops with local schools and students. In June this year, BREC hosted a dozen students from Bunbury Senior High School and the Bunbury Catholic College for an intensive workshop with Bell Shakespeare actors.

“Bunbury and the South West has no shortage of talented young people and I am passionate about giving our future artists opportunities to work with national, professional companies and actors” Says Sharon Custers, General Manager at BREC.

The Merchant of Venice plays at BREC on Saturday 5 August at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now online or by calling 1300 661 272.
